Striking photos and personal, experiential stories lure park rookies and obsessives alike to the rustic charm of America’s National Park lodges.

“The lodges shown in these pages have lessons for everyone, from professional interior designers to someone who may want to bring some of the outdoors inside.”—Mountain Living

Max Humphrey shines a light on 10 rustic National Park lodges in all their airy, timeworn splendor. No historic photos here; the images of the architecture and interiors are as they look today, highlighting these storied places in a fresh, alluring way. Sure, the lobbies are the main stage, but Humphrey touches on grand dining rooms, guest rooms, and rustic canteens alike. He writes about the buildings themselves in terms of the historical goings-on at the time, why they were built, and the players involved, highlighting notable architectural moments and period-specific furnishings. A smattering of pop culture history adds extra bursts of levity throughout.

Lodges and national parks included:

  • The Ahwahnee, Yosemite National Park, California
  • Crater Lake Lodge, Crater Lake National Park, Oregon
  • Curry Village, Yosemite National Park, California
  • El Tovar, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
  • Lake McDonald lodge, Glacier National Park, Montana
  • Lake Quinault Lodge, Olympic National Park, Washington
  • The Oasis, Death Valley NP, California
  • Old Faithful Inn, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

“A heartfelt homage to these hotels that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, a golden era of parkitectural experimentation not to be repeated.”—Sunset Magazine

If I ever run away... you can find me at Alma Home. Their collection of fine goods, brands, and textiles are just as functional as they are thoughtful. Everything from their genuine staff and vibrant space to the local community they draw is a breath of fresh air.

I have to give a special shoutout to Bethany! She was incredibly knowledgeable and helped us find exactly what we needed, guiding us through options and adding her own expert touch. She made the entire shopping experience fun and easy, and you can tell she genuinely cares about helping customers find pieces that suit their style and space perfectly.

★★★★★

One of Casper’s most beautiful stores from the outside to right as you walk in! Beautiful furniture, kitchen items beautiful drink-ware, candles, jewelry all the things. There’s even a small baby section that is darling. My personal favorite is their kitchen towels, something so simple yet so eye catching, the geometry towels the best!

★★★★★

This bright, exciting, unique shop is like nothing you’ll find in Casper and features tons of fun opportunities for anyone’s home. With Lauren Griffith Interiors also housed in the same space, it’s also super fun to browse their tile and textiles too. Everything is dreamy, and there’s glassware to furniture, and more. Pro tip: go to the bathroom to marvel at the beautiful wallpaper and be prepared to want to redo every surface in your home!
